Good bye Super Joe. Tonight’s your night. It’s sad to see one of the greatest players to ever play the game leave, especially when he’s been the heart and soul of your team for its entire existence.

You were perhaps the classiest pro sports player ever to play at your caliber. Today as the Avs start what many consider will be our worst season ever it doesn’t matter because it’s all about celebrating all the massive success you’ve brought to one of the top three teams of the last 15 years.

This franchise is coming full circle with the team falling to Paul Stastny. Before the Avs moved to Colorado their greatest player was Paul’s father, Peter Stastny, one of the top three forwards of the 1980’s. In the early 90’s the Nordiques were a failing team and picked up a prospect in Sakic. Peter Stastny had a chance to mentor a young Sakic who would then become the great leader he became. Now Peter’s son is set to take over the team after being mentored by a veteran Sakic.

This cycle is very familiar in other ways. The dominance of the avalanche in the late 90’s and on was due to having two of the best (at time the two best) centers in the game. Now the Avs have the chance to repeat that with Stastny and a rookie Duchene.

While the future may be bright even the optimist sees this season as a rough one for us Avs fans but hopefully not for long.

I love how the Penguins let President Obama hold the Cup for the photo op, while other teams only let Bush stand next to it holding a miniature replica.

OMG Don’t do it Obama. It’s bad luck to touch it before you win it yourself. Now you’ll never win the Stanley Cup yourself…

I’m gonna be watching TV at 1pm EST today with a sliver of hope that everyone is premature on Sakic’s retirement. The fact remains that Sakic will almost definitely retire and it will be just another blow to the Avs faithful.

When the dust settles this will be a sad day for all of hockey and sports. Sakic was possibly the classiest professional player to ever play at the caliber he played and will end up as one of the best hockey players of all time.

It’s awesome to see a kid like this get so excited to get picked up by the team he loved as a kid. Duchene will make an awesome addition to the Avs roster.

Fuck Yea! Go Hawks and Canes. Well… more like I hope the Wings and Pens loose. (via mattirick)

I have so many random thoughts on this game.

That arena was loud.  Having three of the best players in the world on the ice at the same time helps, I guess.
The second I noticed that slow dribbler was headed towards Ovechkin, wide open on a power play, I knew the puck was going in.  WHY DO I NEVER GET TO HAVE THAT FEELING FOR PLAYERS OF MY FAVORITE TEAMS?!?!?!?
Oh, and then it was like “there’s gonna be a hat trick tonight, I can feel it.”
And then there were two hat tricks.
This picture is from the Washington Post.  Their photographer did a great job with the game.

This was a pretty great game, although the Caps got lazy allowing Crosby’s third goal. I think the Caps will win in 6. And that sea of red looks like so much fun to be in.

It’s Stanley Cup playoff time!!!

The best anual event in all sports starts tonight. I’m completely psyched to watch it all. My only sadness is that I can’t watch Ovie and the Caps in the first round.

While I hate to see anyone score against the Avalanche. This is one of the most incredible shootout goals I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen all of Wolski’s goals.

This is one of the greatest goals I’ve ever seen. Self pass behind the back while spinning around a defender then shooting it in while sliding on his ass. (Ovechkin vs. Montreal in HD 2/18/09)

Time, once again, to wonder if the NHL is becoming more popular than the NBA.
I, for one, have never doubted the NHL for an instant. Except the instigator rule. F that noise.

Reblogged for emphasis, truth, and Gordie Howe Hat Tricks.

Fuck the instigator rule and yay for Gordie Howe hat tricks of which, ironically, Gordie Howe had only one.

I am finding it harder to deal with it this year with the Avs being so shitty. Hopefully they’ll turn it around soon.
