Good bye Super Joe. Tonight’s your night. It’s sad to see one of the greatest players to ever play the game leave, especially when he’s been the heart and soul of your team for its entire existence.
You were perhaps the classiest pro sports player ever to play at your caliber. Today as the Avs start what many consider will be our worst season ever it doesn’t matter because it’s all about celebrating all the massive success you’ve brought to one of the top three teams of the last 15 years.
This franchise is coming full circle with the team falling to Paul Stastny. Before the Avs moved to Colorado their greatest player was Paul’s father, Peter Stastny, one of the top three forwards of the 1980’s. In the early 90’s the Nordiques were a failing team and picked up a prospect in Sakic. Peter Stastny had a chance to mentor a young Sakic who would then become the great leader he became. Now Peter’s son is set to take over the team after being mentored by a veteran Sakic.
This cycle is very familiar in other ways. The dominance of the avalanche in the late 90’s and on was due to having two of the best (at time the two best) centers in the game. Now the Avs have the chance to repeat that with Stastny and a rookie Duchene.
While the future may be bright even the optimist sees this season as a rough one for us Avs fans but hopefully not for long.
