I find it strange that everyone seems to be making such a big deal about the existance of a $99 iPhone. On the outset it’s simple, $99 for a 3G that’s sweet, what could be wrong. People are getting a great device for an even more incredible price.

To me the limiting factor of the iPhone, since the launch of the 3G, has not been the cost of the device itself but the monthly fee associated. The 3G and 3GS bring with it a $30-$50 monthly cost associated with it. With such a high monthly premium for the device an extra $100 to get the S seems to me to be a no-brainier. The monthly cost also seems like it should be the primary reason to dissuade someone from purchasing.

The original iPhone at $20/month including some texting was an incredible deal. Yea edge isn’t as good as 3G but is it worth the extra 75% in cost to get a little faster internet, probably not. But being the fanboy I am i went along with it. The upgrades from the iPhone to the 3GS are definitely worth the cost of the device but I can’t help but feel a little disgusted by how much AT&T is getting from these phones while still screwing everyone over.

The reason they did that the first time around is that 1st Gen Purchasers didn’t get to buy a phone at the subsized priced.  They shelled out $599 for that sucker. They were allowed to upgrade at the discounted price cause they were screwed the first time around.

You purchased said 3G phone at a subsidized price…so no luck this time around.

I’m actually not bummed - Once I get the 3.0 software I can hold out.  The design isn’t new…the only major upgrade is the voice stuff and that’s nothing to go dropping $600/$700 dollars on…

I understand why they’re charging now. What pisses me off is:

1. the extra $130 cost (above canceled contract)
2. the fact that apple didn’t slap them into submission.

Where would AT&T be right now without apple? This is gonna create a lot of apple detractors.

This upgrade is a huge one for me, I really feel the speed limitations a lot on my 3G.

Since I’m going to cancel my contract anyways I’m going to be giving the Pre a very hard look. Multitasking is a big deal and I could continue to use my old iPhone for games.

$599 to get a 3Gs for existing 3G users!

That’s as much as a no contract phone costs right now (or yesterday). This is completely absurd. I vaguely understand the idea of getting a subsidized price for a contract but this cost structure for Apple fans is completely absurd. I was planning on getting a new phone opening day but now I’m just pissed off.

With the last phone they had it right, free upgrade for previous owners. What’s crazy is it’ll cost you $130 less to cancel your contract and buy the subsidized phone than to buy an early upgrade phone.

With AT&T not even supporting tethering (i’m sure for an extra fee) AT&T is obviously the largest liability for Apple and always has been.

I can only imagine how many people are gonna be coming in to an Apple store to get a new phone and walking away disgusted with both Apple and AT&T.

I agree. They treat existing customers like crap. If he only cracked the glass and the lcd is fine, you can replace it without getting a new phone.

I understand the unsubsidized price, I dont understand the new 24mo contract.
